Underneath the once watchful eye of the ancient city of Kourion near the modern day town of Episkopi stretches the beach of Kourion. Truely a city of antiquity, ancient Kourion was an Hellenistic city at the time of Troy, was later mentioned by Herodotus and wisely allied itself with Alexander the Great at his peak. It was at its peak that the city was destroyed when, in the 4th century BC, it was struck by 5 major earthquakes in quick succession - not even Apollo, whose worship rivalled that of Aphrodite on this, her island, could save Kourion from this bad luck. How fitting that this ancient centre of devotion to Apollo, the sun god, should today overlook an almost daily playing out of one of the great sun follies - the Flight of Icarus. Show less
