Mount Athos (MA) is the site of the longest continuous, unbroken monastic community in the world today. Monks have led an eremitical life of solitude and contemplation here from the 9th century, and monasteries as a way of life on MA date from the 10th century. Since 1046 it has been officially known as the Holy Mountain - Ayion Oros. MA shares with places like New York, Santorini, Venice, and the Great Wall of China that quality of offering both a unique and extraordinary experience. These places cannot be experienced by proxy. On MA, the combination of architecture, geography, religious practice, secluded and devoted monasticism, saturated tradition and its elongated history of myths, tales, destruction, miracles and martyrdom, create an experience that cannot be had anywhere else in the world. It is an all male community - no female visitors are allowed. It receives many Orthodox pilgrims for whom MA is a haven of salvation. I joined some of these to see for myself. Show less
